On 1 October 1997, 16-year-old Luke Woodham slit his mother’s throat, then concealed a rifle in his coat and drove to Pearl High School in Mississippi. He opened fire on his school friends, killing two and wounding seven. Woodham was a member of an adolescent demonic cult called’Croth’,and the other six boys in the group were charged with conspiring to help Woodham carry out the attack. Woodham claimed he was under the spell of one of the others, Grant Boyette, who had caused him to be possessed by demons. On 5 June 1998, however, Woodham was found guilty of murdering his mother and sentenced to life. On 13 June he was given two further life sentences and 20 years for the murder of two of his classmates.
